The SM mall chain may be competing side by side with Robinsons but it does not mean the two cannot do business with each other.
Robinsons has quietly opened branches of its Topshop and Topman clothes shops in SM's high-end mall, The Podium, in the Ortigas Center business district in time for the Christmas shopping rush.
The Podium's neighbor, St. Francis Square, in the meantime, will float hundreds of balloons carrying cell phone gift certificates this Sunday and every Sunday up to next month in a novel marketing gimmick to herald the mall's redevelopment into a "tiangge" [flea market].
According to the grapevine, St. Francis Square has enticed the flea market merchants in the successful Virra Mall in the Greenhills area to also set up stalls in the Ortigas Center site, in the hope that shoppers would cut short their trip and venture to the new Ortigas tiangge rather than wade or sit through the horrendous traffic in Greenhills.
Scheduled to open on Oct. 21, the 1,000-stall St. Francis Square, with its anchor McDonalds fast-food store, is positioned at the lower-end of the Megamall retailing triangle, with The Podium occupying the higher tier and the humongous Megamall targeting the middle market.
