The whole EDSA Shrine concept was influenced by church plazas, an idea which came from then Manila Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin, said Ma?osa.
"In most provinces, the church plaza is a place where people congregate, hold meetings or simply meet before going to or after Mass. This is what we have created at the EDSA Shrine," he explained.
The plaza is flanked on both sides by wide staircases intersected by handicap access ramps. They lead to the hexagonal structure (this shape is generally employed to maximize usable space) where the towering bronze statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands.
The second level of the plaza also serves as stage for the annual programs that commemorate the two EDSA revolutions.
